BLANTYRE, MALAWI, 12 January 2009: Security is said to have been tightened in Zimbabwe with police reported to be patrolling key areas. The reports come at a time as the country’s president Robert Mugabe is on leave and would return to office in February.

Police armed with baton sticks, teargas canisters which Mugabe has frequently used in dispersing protesters are said to have been moving around Harare on foot.

Armed riot police have strengthened security patrolling the country’s capital, Harare, a Reuters report said. Media reports in the country said dozens of riot police in armoured trucks and armed with automatic rifles were stationed at a central city park where protesters usually gather for marches.

Last week a BBC report said some of the schools in the country had not yet opened as teachers asked to be paid in US dollars.

A group of Zimbabweans who were traveling to South Africa recently said life was difficult in the country and that if something was not done more people will die. More people have left the county in search of jobs and food.
