ETHIOPIA: Drop in numbers needing food aid
ADDIS ABABA, 30 January 2009 (IRIN): The number of Ethiopians who will require humanitarian assistance in the next six months has dropped, mainly due to recent food harvests, an official said.
– It is due to conducive Meher rains in western Ethiopia, Mitku Mitiku Kassa, State Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, told IRIN Friday.
– There is also no increase in severely malnourished children – according to reports, about 34.000 children are acutely malnourished, added he.
A recent joint assessment by the government and its humanitarian partners found that 4,9 million Ethiopians would require humanitarian assistance in the next six months.
