Why do segments of the Pakistani society increasingly share viewpoints with the Taliban while they simultaneously condemn acts of violence? How can we account for the disproportionality between individuals adhering to anti-democratic and radical Islamist ideology on one side and those among them that actually commit acts of terrorism on the other?

This seminar critically examines the role of radical ideologies in understanding radical behaviour and terrorism. In public and scholarly debates a simple causality between ideas and action is often implied and assumed, especially when it comes to understanding ‘Islamist violence’ and suggesting policy initiatives to prevent acts of terrorism.

Drawing on two different cases, trends in Pakistan society and Islamist environments in Denmark, the seminar will illuminate what we know about the link between Islamist rhetoric and radical behaviour.
