The landscape of biofuels has developed rapidly during the past decade. Not only are many countries involved in the production and/or consumption of biofuels, biofuels have also become global rather than local commodities. Biofuels have become big business, in which major companies, credit agencies, national and international governmental organizations are involved.

In this open seminar, Arthur Mol will examine whether different biofuel landscapes, with different characteristics, scales, actor-networks, and controversies are developing towards each other or whether a specific one is coming to dominate the industry, and with what consequences.

Jolene Lin will analyse the legal complexities of the EU biofuel ‘sustainability’ certification scheme, which is creating a transnational governance regime combining elements of private certification and public authority.

Both will assess what these trends mean in terms of the environmental and social costs of biofuel production. These two keynote speeches will be followed by a panel discussion involving key industry and NGO representatives, and by an open discussion session.

This seminar is a part of the international conference Governing Sustainable Biofuels: Markets, Certification and Technology that takes place on 19-20 November 2012 at DIIS and Copenhagen Business School (CBS). It is organized by the Copenhagen Biofuels Research Network and funded by the Sustainability Platform, CBS, DIIS, BIOSoc (University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University) and the Technical University of Denmark.
