Experienced Strategic Adviser with expertise in rule of law & access to justice

 

 

The Danish Institute for Human Rights is looking for an experienced human rights expert specialised in rule of law and access to justice to provide technical human rights and legal advice to our international work.  

 

The Danish Institute for Human Rights works to develop strong national human rights systems in countries in Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, Asia, Caucasus and Europe, focusing on collaboration with state partners such as national human rights institutions, ministries,  justice and security actors.

 

The strategic adviser will be part of the Human Rights Systems Department in the international area of the Institute.

 

AS A STRATEGIC ADVISER you are as a member of the programme team responsible for providing high-level advice and expertise to the Programme and Project Managers on the overall strategic direction and development of programmes and projects. You will report to the Department Director.

 

 

The role includes the following responsibilities:

  • Advise the Programme Manager on all aspects of strategy, development and implementation of the programme;
  • Support the Programme Manager and Project Managers in integrating DIHR’s international strategy and theory of change into programme and project design and implementation;
  • Assist the Programme Team in identification of strategic opportunities, synergies, partnerships and resource mobilisation for rule of law and access to justice;
  • Provide expert input on legal and justice issues on key programme deliverables and implementation;
  • Engage in dialogue with authorities inprogramme countries to ensure the support necessary for the programme and projects relating to legal and justice issues;
  • Develop and maintain close working relations with nationalpartners as well as promote local ownership of projects;
  • Provide support and sparring to DIHR’s local offices in selected programme countries;
  • Provide technical and substantive contributions to concept notes and programme development on rule of law and access to justice.

 

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERTISE AND EXPERIENCE

 

  • Master’s degree in law, human rights or similar;
  • 8-10 years professional experience working with human rights, rule of law and access to justice in a development context;
  • Experience with legal analysis and review of legislation etc.;
  • Experience from partnership-based programmes and diplomatic management of relations with partners and other stakeholders;
  • International experience in working with National Human Rights Institutions (NHRI) an advantage;
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written), French considered a strong advantage, Arabic, Chinese and/or Russian an advantage;
  • International work experience in human rights protection, ideally from Asia, Africa and the Middle East &North Africa (MENA);
  • Experience with donor relations highly preferred, knowledge of Danish foreign policy and development cooperation an advantage;
  • Experience with information and communications technology an advantage.

SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The position is full-time; it is based in Copenhagen with significant international travel (up to 40% of the time). The salary is set in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
