Background

A year has now passed since Russia began an air campaign to target anti-Assad forces, some of which backed by the United States and its regional allies. While other regional and global players, such as Israel and China, have a less pronounced, but still important role in the conflict.

This seminar will examine the geopolitics of non-Western intervention in the Syrian conflict, placing a spotlight on the positions, actions and interest of Russia, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and China. Can non-Western intervention lead to a settlement of the Syrian conflict? Or will the myriad of regional and global powers prolong the conflict and humanitarian crisis even further?
