DIGNITY – Danish Institute Against Torture seeks a Country Director in Tunisia.

Do you have relevant management experience from the field of human rights and development, and are you are strong in promoting coordination among different parties, state and non-state?

Then you might be the profile we are looking for to help us build our steadily growing engagement in the MENA region in the fight against torture.

DIGNITY – Danish Institute Against Torture is a human rights organization with more than 30 years of experience in combatting torture. DIGNITY’s main office is in Copenhagen, Denmark, and it has two country offices in Amman and Tunis, respectively. DIGNITY is currently working in more than 20 countries, including a major engagement in the Middle East and North Africa. DIGNITY works multi-disciplinarily with prevention of torture across the globe and rehabilitation of torture victims. 

The new Country Director of our office in Tunisia, will head the office and ensure implementation of DIGNITY’s vision and engagement in Tunisia, in line with the established 5-year strategy.  The Country Director will furthermore guide implementation of the annual plan in Tunisia as well as oversee the full range of financial, administrative, operational and human resource management in the country operations. The Country Director will also be responsible for policy analysis and representation of DIGNITY in various fora, conducting advocacy and ensuring that resource mobilisation opportunities are pursued in cooperation with colleagues in Copenhagen and Amman.

DIGNITY has worked in the MENA region since 1994 and achieved significant results and growth in the last 10 years. DIGNTIY’s Tunisia engagement was established in 2012, and supports projects in rehabilitation of torture survivors and prevention of torture with partners, such as the Ministry of Justice and the Tunisian League of Human Rights. The office is also involved in regional engagements with partners from North Africa and the Middle East under a steadily growing partner portfolio and diversifying funding base. The Country Director will be part of DIGNITY’s MENA team, and report to the Head of Detention Department at DIGNITY Copenhagen. The ability of the Country Director to build and manage effective partnerships, will be considered essential to continue this growth and keep DIGNITY on the map in Tunisia as a highly credible partner in the country’s fight against torture.

Your key responsibilities will be:

·         Represent DIGNITY in Tunisia and conduct negotiations with current and potential partners

·         In coordination with colleagues in DIGNITY Copenhagen develop and support the implementation of DIGNITY’s strategies and projects in Tunisia

·         Keep abreast national priorities and plans pertaining to our engagement and undertake timely strategic review of DIGNITY’s engagement ensuring continued relevance and impact

·         Mitigate and manage risks to safeguard DIGNITY and partners’ work, reputation and safety

·         Coordinate technical support and cooperation in DIGNITY’s projects and with partners

·         Support/advise and supervise partners in strategic planning, financial management and capacity building

·         Be in regular dialogue with donors and international organizations

·         Perform budgeting and accounting reviews and ensure that contractual obligations and donor policies and strategies are adhered to

 

Your requirements for doing so:

·         Minumum Masters degree in social sciences, health, law or similar

·         Minimum ten years of experience working with partners and networks internationally in development projects

·         Bilingual in Arabic and English, and fluency in French

·         Experience in managing and supporting the development of local staff

·         Knowledge and experience of working on promotion and protection of human rights with civil society organizations and preferable also with governmental institutions

·         Demonstrated ability to undertake high-level representation and advocacy

·         Ability to understand facilitate network and cooperation across boundaries and communicate effectively

 

The position is offered as a fixed term contract for the duration of two years, subject to the availability of funding.

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary commensurate with their skills and experience. Employment conditions will be based on existing agreements between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the relevant professional association.      

The position is placed at DIGNITY office in Tunis city, Tunisia. The final interview will take place in Denmark.
