DIIS DOCS & TALKS screens the international award-winning documentary “Gulabi Gang”, about how women in some of the poorest regions of India empower themselves and take up the fight against gender violence, caste oppression and widespread corruption.

The movie is followed by a critical debate on the transformative potential of gender equality policies and practices in current development cooperation.

In international development cooperation, gender equality is often a key priority. However, in different development organisations gender equality norms are often interpreted differently and far from the reality of gender-based oppression, violence and lack of livelihood opportunities.

Based on these insights, international experts discuss the following questions:

  • Do development organisations have a positive role to play in reducing discrimination and marginalization of women?
  • What role do global gender equality norms play and can they be strengthened in the changing world order?
  • Do country level economic and political changes create opportunities for increased influence by women’s organisations so that we witness an increased mobilization by women’s organisations around the world?

After the film and debate there will be a glass of wine in the Lobby Bar.

This is an after-event to the morning’s seminar at DIIS where researchers will discuss findings from the international research programme on global gender equality in international development politics, GLONORead more about the morning’s seminar.
