Background

 

Despite ongoing conflicts, the internationalized Somali economy has evolved since the collapse of the central state in 1991. However, our knowledge and understanding of how Somali economic life is organized and how it influences political dynamics remain limited.

This seminar provides preliminary insights into everyday economic activity and its linkages to state formation in Somali East Africa, which is the topic of the GOVSEA research program run by Roskilde University and DIIS.

Somali business is marked by strong, transnational dynamics. The seminar focuses on the distinct patterns of trade and power along three transnational corridors in the broader Horn of Africa region.

The seminar also launches the publication of the first four Working Papers published in the GOVSEA Paper Series. Three of them is now available at www.diis.dk:
