Lancering af nye Dansk Flygtningehjælp-program i Somalia

The Danish Refugee Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs invite all those interested to participate in the launch of a new programme and engage with Christian Friis Bach and Ulla Tørnæs on what the new programme may mean for Somalia, Somali refugees and for the achievement of durable solutions.

Background

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has awarded DKK 100 million to the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) to promote durable solutions for people affected by displacement from and in South and Central Somalia. With this remarkable act of confidence, the Danish government entrusts DRC with a responsibility to deliver solutions in a highly complex and fragile environment.

DRC is proud to take on this responsibility. DRC does so, not as an optimistic newcomer, but based on two decades of experience, evidence and acquired realism working in Somalia. But how can it be done? How can solutions – durable ones – be promoted for the displaced, returnees and poor hosting communities in a country wrecked by decades of conflict, violence, extreme poverty, drought and state collapse? How can the sustainable development goals be promoted in such a setting, in collaboration with local partners?

Programme launch

DRC and the Danish MFA hope to see interested stakeholders from civil society, research institutions, and the general public to a presentation and discussion of the forthcoming programme: what will be done, and why do we believe it can work and generate positive change for Somalia and Somalis? How do we help ensure that the pursuit of durable solutions is anchored with the all-important actors in this process – local authorities and civil society actors?

DRC’s Secretary General, Christian Friis Bach, and the Danish Minister of Development Cooperation, Ulla Tørnæs, will present their perspectives on the project and its linkages to the wider search for durable solutions for the displaced, and be available to answer questions and comments from the audience.
