Background

Since the global financial crisis, both China and Japan have been intensifying their expansion of overseas investment, with a prominent focus on infrastructure. While China competes on easy capital, cheap price, swift implementation and developing country experience, Japan brands itself with high quality, reliability and sustainability.

These differences and competitions play out not only in Asia but also in other parts of the world, including Europe, the US, Africa and the Middle East, changing the economic and geopolitical landscapes across continents.

This seminar therefore provides an overview of China’s and Japan’s overseas infrastructure investment and strategies respectively, followed by a specific case of the Arctic, with insights from experts based in China, Japan and Denmark.
