When the bridge turned 100 years in 2005, the World Bank appointed Ramboll to conduct a structural analysis, where the bridge was examined in detail with up-to-date calculation methods. Considering the age of the bridge and the humid climate beneath the great waterfall, the overall load capacity was assessed as satisfactory and the structural state of the bridge remains impressive.
Ramboll suggested some limited repair work and in return, the functional lifetime of the bridge would be extended by another 100 years. At the same time, it was recommended that there should be performed regular check-ups to discover potential cases of beginning deterioration.
In an international competition, the owners of the bridge have now asked for a renewed checkup and preparation for the necessary repairs. Once again, Ramboll won the project and can utilise the calculation model and inspection data used in 2005.
“Ramboll has specialised in old riveted steel bridges. We have experience from several older bridges, for example the Danish Storstrøm Bridge and the Old Little Belt Bridge. The Victoria Falls Bridge is another exciting project, both in terms of engineering and aesthetics”, says Chief Consultant Bjørn Nordgaard Lassen from Ramboll’s department for Bridge and Tunnel Asset Maintenance.
The Victoria Falls Bridge has a span of 156 meters across a 120 meters deep gorge where the Zambezi River marks the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
