Job: Save the Children Denmark is looking for an International Project Controller and Advisor, Finance

International Project Controller and Advisor, Finance

Are you looking for a challenging role where you can apply your financial expertise within International Project Cycle Management and Controlling and Monitoring of International Projects? Do you thrive building strong, collaborative working relationships and are you interested in further developing your knowledge of complex donor compliance? If you also want to join our Finance team during an exciting transformation, then you might be right for Save the Children Denmark’s (SCD) International Project Controller and Advisor position at the world’s largest independent organisation for children.

Who are we?

In November, our new CFO and Finance leadership team initiated an exciting transformation to ensure a continued focus on effective processes, team work and engagement in the Finance department.  We are now looking for one more colleague to join our team of seven in the newly created Project Finance & Compliance section.  The key mandate of our section is to provide quality counseling, financial support and quality assurance regarding all financial aspects throughout the entire project cycle.  The successful candidate will become an important part of this continued team journey and have a chance to influence how we will shape and conduct financial project controlling in the future, in order to ensure we live up to Save the Children’s high-quality standards.

Our section is one of three in the Finance Department along with, Accounting and Business Finance & Due Diligence. You will have ongoing interaction and sparring with your diverse and knowledgeable team mates, along with a close collaboration with country offices, as well as many cross functional stakeholders from various departments.  You can expect to be met with challenging developmental tasks where you will learn and grow.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Our new Project Controller will focus on the following key areas:

  1. Act as financial sparring partner to the Country Engagement Managers (CEM) and as donor compliance advisor:
    • You will be the financial counterpart to the CEM who is responsible for the management of the individual international project implementation for a specific geographical area. Your role is to provide solid financial advice covering donor compliance, pipeline projects, ongoing projects and finalization of projects with both the CEM and the international country offices.
    • Quality assurance of reports and budgets, ensuring they contain correct and accurate information required by the recipient.
  2. Be the Donor Compliance Expert for our country offices:
  • Actively monitor and advise country offices regarding donor compliance and best practices  and assist in making the financial reporting to the donor as smooth as possible. Much of your time will therefore be spent communicating with the Country Offices’ financial section.
    • The relationship with and understanding of the Country Offices is therefore important, and to ensure the above plus in-depth analyses of compliance with donor regulations, several monitoring visits to the country offices will be necessary. It is expected that you will travel a couple of times a year to country offices to be able to fill the role as a sparring partner for the CEM, identify risks and monitor donor compliance.  The country offices are located in volatile countries, where emergency assistance is needed the most.  Specific locations will depend on your portfolio of countries.
    • You will also advise various internal stakeholders about donor compliance, for example our CEM and the Country Office.
    • You will need to acquire a general understanding of the main donors in Save the Children Denmark’s project portfolio. In time, we expect you to develop expertise with one specific donor, or another key stakeholder.
  1. Optimization of internal procedures to maximize efficiency while ensuring donor compliance:
  • You will also be expected to continuously challenge current systems and procedures and to strive to constantly maximize the quality of resources at our disposal. Therefore, formulation of procedures and development of controlling methods will be required and encouraged.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

In addition to a relevant Education, for example in the areas of economics, statistics or international business, our new colleague has the following skills and experience:

  • Proven experience with financial project cycle management
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles
  • Understanding of how to read legal based contracts and guidelines
  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken. French is an advantage but not a requirement
  • Skilled in using office 365, especially excel

It would be an advantage if you also have experience working with:

  • Audits
  • Institutional donors such as Danida, ECHO, or DEVCO
  • Similar organizations, such as the UN or an NGO abroad
  • Navision or other accounting software (ERP).

On a personal note, you have excellent communication skills and naturally reach out, even across boarders, to build relationships and fruitful collaborations.  You are self driven and take responsibility for your tasks.  You have an eye for working smarter, and you are energized by tackling the root cause of reoccurring problems for true efficiencies, rather than just treating the symptoms.  In this role, you will constantly be challenged with all sorts of issues that will interrupt the normal flow of things, and you must adapt, develop frameworks and knowledge share with the team to solve these issues.

Conditions and Recruitment Process

You will be employed according to the terms and conditions of the local Collective Agreement between Save the Children Denmark and the relevant unions. The position could be either an AC or HK classification with 37 working hours per week.

Deadline for applications is Sunday 12th of August 2018. 1st Interviews are expected to be held on Thursday the 16th of August.
