We have passed the 100-day mark of Donald Trump’s presidency. Unsurprisingly, Trump thinks it has been the greatest US presidency ever. But what do analysts of US politics say?

Two perspectives on the US presidency are emerging. Many observers see the Trump administration as slowly but steadily moving towards more conventional policy-making, as the likes of chief strategist, Stephen Bannon, and chief trade counselor, Peter Navarro, are increasingly marginalized by authoritative figures such as Gary Cohn, chief of the National Economic Council, and James Mattis, Secretary of Defense.

This perspective is, however, challenged by more skeptical analysts. It is premature, they say, to conclude that the moderates in Trump’s administration have triumphed over the radical populists.

It is much more likely that White House policy will take shape in a continuous battle between the moderates and the radicals in the Trump administration, thereby adding to the already considerable unpredictability of US policy.

We have invited two academics – Richard Sweeney and Edward Ashbee – who are astute observers of US politics as well as of US foreign policies, to come to DIIS to take stock of the Trump presidency.

Based on the first 100 days, what can we expect from the Trump administration over the next couple of years? We hear that Trump’s approval ratings are historically low for an incoming US President, but does that mean that the “right-wing populism”, that many say was crucial in getting him elected, is already on the decline?

How may we understand that political economy of Trump – in the past, the present and the future?

The speakers for this seminar have composed enlightening abstracts, which can be found to the right.
