Seminar: Få Afrika i gang

Sub-Saharan Africa faces three big inter-related developments over the next generation. It will double its population to two billion by 2045.

By then more than half of Africans will be living in cities. This group of mostly young people will be connected with each other and the world through mobile devices.

Properly harnessed and planned for, these developments could be tremendously positive forces for change. However, without economic growth and jobs, rapid urban growth could prove a political and social catastrophe.

Old systems of patronage and of muddling through will not be able to meet the demands of such population growth rates. Instead, if leaders want to continue in power, they will have to promote economic growth in a much more dynamic manner.

In this seminar, we will take stock of these issues with three of the authors of a new book: Making Africa Work.

The book is a first-hand account of a rapidly changing region and is a handbook for ensuring growth beyond commodities and creating jobs across the continent; it is a book short on the past and long on the future. Read more
