Seminar: Securing lives in an extractive context

While extractive industries promise to bring economic development to the regions in which they operate, and their awareness of human rights are increasing, many of the resource-rich regions of the global South are conflictive and deadly. 

In 2016, Global Witness documented the murder of 200 land and environmental defenders on a worldwide scale. Latin America continues to be the most dangerous place to be an environmental activist, with 60% murdered in 2016. 

Colombia has seen a spike in murders (counted to 37 in 2016) – which happens parallel to the signing of the peace deal between the government and the guerrilla group FARC.

The seminar sheds light on this type of violence along with the resource and land conflicts related to it, and investigates the issues and dynamics behind. Hereafter, the seminar takes up the question: what is our roles as Danes and what can we do about it? Read more
