Seminar: Stabilisation – lessons learned from the crisis in the Sahel (København)

With the collapse of Libya, stability and development in the Sahel have become key foreign policy priorities and challenges such as terrorism and irregular migration have made the international community engage actively in stabilisation efforts in the region e.g. with development assistance and support for the UN’s peacekeeping mission (MINUSMA).

Further, the countries in the region are increasingly engaging at both state and regional level in addressing instability stemming from terrorist and radical groups resulting in new regional initiatives such as the G5 Sahel Joint Force.

While the need for security measures is rapidly growing more long-term challenges related to development, lack of state presence and economic growth persist.

To what extent are these long-term challenges linked to the increasing instability in the region?

What steps can the Sahel countries and the international community take to balance these two priorities?

And what lessons can be drawn from the increased instability in the Sahel to other fragile regions?
 
Foreign Ministers from region and the Danish minister for international development cooperation, Ulla Tørnæs (V), will discuss this at a public event in Copenhagen on 6 June 2018. 

The discussion will also examine the lessons learned on stabilisation in the Sahel and discuss some of the broader aspects of stabilisation and security in fragile states.

West Africa Director, Lori-Anne Benoni-Theroux from Institute for Security Studies, will moderate the talk.
