Understanding Libya today

Since the fall of long-time ruler colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the effort to create key state institutions in Libya has been unsuccessful and the country has descended into conflict and political uncertainty. The recent coup against the UN-backed government and the re-establishment of a third rival government in Tripoli is but the last example of a series of events illustrating the fragility of state authority.

In correlation with the deterioration of state structures in Libya, various actors have picked up arms and thrown the country into further uncertainty. As a result, Libya has become a key arena for militant jihadism and militarized politics in the Sahel and North Africa.
