At the UN in Geneva the Personal Representative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation in Cuba said Tuesday that an “unprecedented wave of oppression” had taken place in the country, with many arrests and very heavy sentences handed down.
The Representative, Christine Chanet, told the Commission on Human Rights that those arrested had been tried rapidly, with no lawyers present, and were considered arbitrarily detained by the appropriate United Nations Working Group. Their conditions of detention were of great concern, she said, but added that Cuba had made progress in the field of economic, social and cultural rights, and in the area of religious freedom.
