NEW YORK, 3 January: For the first time in its history, the United Nations holds a certified copy of its own Charter, signed on 26 June 1945 by the world bodys original 51 members (blandt dem Danmark, red.).
It was presented Thursday to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon by the head of the United States National Archives. Allan Weinstein made the trip to New York and gave the certified copy of the original document to Mr. Ban.
The Secretary-General made the request to Dr. Weinstein last October when he saw the original document at the National Archives – designated by the Charter itself to be its custodian – during an official trip to Washington, UN spokesperson Michele Montas said.
– Each of the 51 signatories has a certified copy. The Organization itself now has one, she noted.
