Germany has decided to support DanChurchAid with 450.000 euro (3,35 mio. DKR) for a humanitarian demining project in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. The money will benefit the ongoing Humanitarian Demining Programme of the organisation and its partners JASMAR and OSIL in the area, DanChurchaid and the German Embassy in Copenhagen noted Thursday in a joint statement.
Germany has been active in the humanitarian demining for a long time by supporting national projects as well as third party activities.
The German Government is aware that DanChurchAid has successfully worked in the field of humanitarian demining for over a decade and is willing to ensure the continuation of their activities in Sudan. The programme in Sudan aims at marking and clearing land mines and unexploded ordnance from more than 20 years of civil war.
At the same time it serves to build up local expertise in mine clearing and to strengthen partner organisations in Sudan. The clearing of mines is a precondition for the return of a large number of refugees to the area. By supporting the DanChurchAid-Project Germany wants to contribute to the achievement of lasting peace and reconciliation in wartorn Sudan.
