KAMPALA, 14. December: Legalising abortion would bring a curse on (forbandelse over) the nation, the three main Ugandan Churches have said.
The Uganda Joint Christian Council said, “legalising abortion would inevitably attract Gods judgement. It would cause the nation to slide further away from our national motto of “For God and my country”.
“Abortion is tantamount to (det samme som) murder which is a direct violation of God’s commandment,” they added.
In a statement signed by the Catholic Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, Anglican Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi and Metropolitan Jonah lwanga of the Orthodox Church, they said the proposal was similar to legalising a sin.
This was in response to reports that health workers and MPs want abortion legalised to reduce the maternal mortality rate, mainly caused by induced abortions.
The clergy stressed that all human life is from God and is therefore sacred at all stages of its development. They, however, regretted the high rate of loss through maternal mortality.
Reports show that 85.000 women are treated in medical facilities for abortion-related complications every year. Ugandas population is skyrocketing.
