The Ugandan government is investigating a play titled “Vagina Monologues” aimed at reducing violence against women before it is launched in the east African country on February 19.

Minister of State for Information Nsaba Buturo, said Tuesday that his consultations with other ministers come after concerns raised that the title of the play is vulgar.

– We can not just let it go to the public before we know what it is all about, Buturo said, adding that the language used is vulgar according to the Ugandan cultures.

According to the organizers of the play directed by a Kenyan, Mumbi Kaigwa, over 20 Ugandan women are to take part in the play.

The play organized by a coalition of four non-governmental organizations is aimed at raising funds for the war-torn northern Uganda and also a campaign to stop violence against women.

The organizers include Akina Mama Wa Africa, Action Aid International Uganda, ISSIS Women’s International Cross-Cultural Exchange and Uganda Womens Network.

When the play was first staged in Kenya in 2001, it caused shock in the society there.
