Mens Danmark trækker sig ud af Zambia med bistand, er kineserne på vej ind med stormskridt, fremgår det af Verdensbankens presseoversigt torsdag:

Chinese investment in Zambia is expected to more than double to 2,4 billion US dollar in 2011, driven mainly by investments in mining and manufacturing, the southern African nation’s trade minister said on Thursday.

The investment would equal about 20 percent of Zambia’s economy, according to the World Bank data.

Chinese direct investment in Zambia exceeded 1 billion dollar in 2010 and created more than 15.000 jobs, Zambia’s vice president said this month.

In February 2007 Chinese President Hu Jintao inaugurated a huge mining investment zone at the end of a two-day visit. His itinerary was cut short due to planned protests against the alleged exploitation of local workers by Chinese firms.

In February 2010 Zambia and China signed a mining cooperation agreement and deal to set up a joint economic (free)zone.

And in august last year Zambia and China agreed to build a second hydroelectic power plant on the Kafue River. The first one was built decades ago with assistance from then Yugoslavia.
