In Focus: Thai politics costing lives. Again.

The 11th century temple Preah Vihear is the centre of a decades-long border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia with roots going back to border maps drawn during the French colonial period.

The temple has been ruled to belong to Cambodia in 1962. Thailand accepts Cambodian ownership of the temple but disputes the land surrounding it.

Since Preah Vihear was listed as a UN World Heritage site in 2008 tensions have risen again.

When recently a group of Thai politicians and activists were charged with illegal entry into the disputed border area and two members convicted of spying by a Cambodian court this provoked a new outburst of the conflict.

Anya Palm, freelance journalist based in Bangkok, writes about the recent developments in the border dispute and a Thailand troubled by conflicts in this week’s In Focus blog.
