In Focus: Are the “flower revolutions” in the Middle East and North Africa endangering stability in China?

Calls over the internet for Chinese people to stage “Jasmine protests” inspired by the recent events in the Arab world has made the Chinese authorities nervous.

Massive police forces have been deployed to monitor and stop protesters and foreign journalists have been warned from and also forcibly hindered from reporting on demonstrations. More than a hundred dissidents and activists have also been detained or threatened.

But what is the likelyhood for large-scale anti-regime protests in China similar to what has happened in the Arab world?

Christian Göbel, research fellow at the Centre for East and Southeast Asian Studies, Lund University discusses the possibilities in this week’s In Focus blog on the AsiaPortal – se http://barha.asiaportal.info/blogs/in-focus/2011/march/are-flower-revolutions-middle-east-and-north-africa-endangering-stability-
