In focus: “Freedom is Just Another Word for Nothing Left To Lose?” – West Papua Declares its Independence, Again
In the western half of the island New Guinea consisting of the two Indonesian provinces Papua and West Papua (collectively known as Tanah Papua), a struggle for independence has been going on for over four decades, mostly unnoticed by the rest of the world.
The territory was transferred from Dutch colonial rule to Indonesian authority in the 1960s under the auspices of the UN.
Though the two provinces have enjoyed special autonomy for a decade, local discontent runs high, culminating in a proclamation of independence on October 19, 2011, which led to a violent crack-down by Indonesian security forces.
Henri Myrttinen has a PhD in conflict studies focusing on masculinities and violence in Timor-Leste (Øst-Timor).
He has previously been working for a number of international NGOs and research institutions, focusing especially on post-conflict and post-disaster societies in Southeast Asia and Central and Eastern Europe.
He is presently holding a post-doc stipend at NIAS. In this article he describes the background to the conflict in Tanah Papua.
