Public Event: Building Resilience and Protecting Development Gains During Times of War

The war in Ukraine has caused a tremendous loss of life and livelihoods, putting stress on the economy, and forcing millions of people to flee their homes, with spill-over effects on neighboring countries, and not least Moldova.

The Government of Ukraine estimates cost of damages of at least US$700 billion over the next ten years as buildings, roads, bridges, hospitals, and schools have been destroyed. The war has caused half the country’s businesses to shut completely, while the other half is struggling. As the fighting continues, the negative repercussions ripple across Ukraine, the region, and the world.

As the destruction intensifies, efforts to rebuild continue unabated. Across humanitarian, development and peacebuilding needs, the coordinated UN response is assisting the people and the Government of Ukraine to recover and reconstruct now, ensuring that immediate needs are linked to long-term recovery and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Join us for a debate with the Danish State Secretary for Development Policy and the UNDP Regional Director for Europe together with a group of distinguished diplomats, experts and practitioners, to hear their take on what is at stake and how the international community can best support Ukraine meet their current needs while paving the way for recovery.
