Africa has failed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set for the period from 1992 to 2002 with the number of people living in poverty having doubled in the decade, according to Kerfalla Yansane, Vice Chairman of the Board of the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC).
He told specialists and government officials from about 20 countries at AU-NEPAD MDG sub-regional consultations that “the African continent is off track while the rest of world is moving forward.”
The specialist noted that Africa had achieved only 10 percent out of 40 percent of the goals set for 1990-2015 in general.
According to Yansane, Africa is probably the only development region where most of the MDGs might not be attained under current development and governance scenarios.
