Number of active UN peacekeeping operations: 16 (out of 60 since 1948), budgeted for about 4,5 billion dollar for the period July 2004 – June 2005. One hundred and six countries are contributing a total of 67.392 military personnel and civilian police, as of July 2005.
Number of active current political and peacebuilding missions: 10, with 639 international civilian personnel, as of July 2005.
Requests per year for help with democratic elections acted on by the Electoral Assistance Division of the Department of Political Affairs: since 1992, an average of 18; 20 in the most recent 12-month period, including in Afghanistan, Burundi, Iraq and Palestine.
The UN system
The 15 UN specialized agencies:
the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development), ILO (International Labor Organisation), IMF (International Monetary Fund), IMO (International Maritime Organisation), ITU (International Telecommunication Union), FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation), UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation), UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation), UPU (Universal Postal Union), WHO (World Health Organisation), WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), WMO (World Meteorological Organization), WTO (World Tourism Organization), and the World Bank.
These agencies, excluding the World Bank group and the IMF, were budgeted for approximately 2,2 billion dollar in 2005.
The ten programmes, funds, and other organs:
UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development), UNDCP (United Nations Drug Control Programme), UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), UNEP (United Nations Environment Program), UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), UN-HABITAT (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), UNHCR (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), UNICEF (United Nations Childrens Fund), UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East), and the WFP (World Food Programme).
Number of employees in the UN system (excluding the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund): about 56.600 people in 2004.
The UN system has devoted its attention, influence and resources to human betterment and the development of resources, skills and potentials throughout the world. Annual contributions for development channeled through the UN system amounted to about 10,5 billion US dollar in 2003.
The UN Development Programme, with staff in 166 countries, leads the UNs work on eradicating extreme poverty and promoting good governance in the developing world.
UNICEF works in 157 countries, primarily on child protection, immunization, early childhood, fighting HIV/AIDS and girls education.
The World Bank provides developing countries with loans and grants of around 18 billion-20 billion dollar a year, and has supported more than 9.500 development projects since 1947.
