WASHINGTON, March 30, 2010 – The World Bank Tuesday approved a large Agriculture Rehabilitation and Recovery Support Project for the DR Congo (former Zaire), consisting of an IDA Grant of 120 million US dollar (660 mio. DKR).
The project aims to increase the vast Central African countrys agricultural productivity and improve marketing of crops and animal products by smallholder farmers (småbønder/familiebrug) in targeted areas.
There are three components to the project:
* the first component being improving agricultural and animal production,
* the second being marketing infrastructure improvement, and
* the third being capacity-building support to the Ministry of Agri-culture and Ministry of Rural Development, and project manage-ment.

Meanwhile, in related news, agricultural experts said, that feeding a fast-growing global population in the face of climate change and stagnant funding for food aid and farm research will require a fundamental revamp of agriculture.
– We cannot address world food security risks effectively only through a science and technology agenda,, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) former Director General Joachim von Braun told a conference on Sunday.
