The majority or 90 percent of the Tanzanian population is free of HIV/AIDS, according to figures released by an anti-HIV/AIDS specialist on Saturday in Dar es Salaam.

Adeline Kimambo, board member of the African Medical and Research Foundation and former chief medical officer at Tanzanias Health Ministry, said that the majority of the Tanzanian population had not been infected with the virus.

But the specialist proposed that people take precautions to guard against the spread of the disease.

– It is necessary for people to understand their zero status, so that they can protect themselves from infection. Voluntary counseling and testing is the best strategy to reach over 90 percent of our people who are HIV/AIDS free, said the specialist.

Available figures show that HIV/AIDS prevalence among adults stands at 7,8 percent in Tanzania, where at least 2 million people have been infected with the virus while HIV/AIDS claims an average of 140.000 lives a year in the east African country.
