By Solomon Tembang Mforgham, AfricaNews reporter in Limbe, Cameroon CAMEROON, 16. November 2008: Emergency aid has finally reached crisis-stricken eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the UN refugee agency – UNHCR – disclosed.
The agency is getting ready for a major distribution to the many thousands of displaced people. Spokesperson David Nthengwe said supplies include personal effects.
Speaking in Goma in the eastern DRC, he said the supplies include blankets, plastic sheeting, jerry cans and kitchen sets. He said the distribution will be coordinated between UNHCR and other agencies in Goma.
However, aid agencies are reportedly having a hard time learning the number and status of displaced people in Rutshuru and Kanyabayonga, north of Goma, where much of the recent fighting has taken place, but the number is believed to be high.
