Women empowerment can remove poverty: micro finance experts
PANAJI, 9 September: Experts feel that with holistic women empowerment, Indias poverty can be decreased by 50 per cent by 2050.
– Empowerment is a process of authorising to think, behave and give in a way that gives economic independence, Planet Finance India Executive Director Charudatta Paneghrayam, said.
Presenting a paper on “Empowerment Through Microfinance” during a conference on finance called “Samriddhi”, which was jointly hosted by Goa Institute of Management and Confederation of Indian Industries, Charudatta said the emphasis has to be laid on women empowerment as they form the crux in rural families.
Listing the challenges in empowering women, Charudatta said that there are tendencies not to involve women in economic matters in the family and hence they do not enhance their employability.
He said that microfinance has achieved extensive recognition in the last five years.
– The attempt is to percolate (filtrere) the economic benefits to different levels of society and the evolution process of leadership should extend below the creamy layer, the speaker said during the conference in South Goa.
Many boutique programs are being carved out to create social environments to make people economically independent, he said adding, – They also help in learning how to utilize physical asset.
The participants in the conference felt that money is not an important issue in microfinancing but it is technology and reach that is vital.
– Innovative methods are required to make microfinancing accessible and acceptable to the poor and needy, an expert felt.
