“The loan assistance will be now at 460 million dollar instead of earlier commitment of 300 million for the construction of Padma bridge, an important project for connecting one third of the countrys population in the southwestern region”, the Bank said in the statement at the end of a visit of World Bank Vice President for South Asia Isabel Guerrero.

With the new commitment of the World Bank, the government in Dhaka has so far received assurance of getting 1,615 billion dollar from different countries and donor agencies for the mega project involving about 1,8 billion.

The Bangladeshi Communication Minister said that the World Banks additional support for the Padma Bridge would expedite the project and the government would be able to manage the rest of the amount to be required.

Meanwhile, the government has completed the process in connection with the payment for acquisition of land and other compensation for the Padma bridge project.

A total of 2243 acres of land have been acquired in Munshiganj, Shariatpur and Madaripur districts for the Padma bridge project, said the statement.
