Nordiska Afrikainstitutet (NAI) i Uppsala i Sverige er torsdag vært for en forelæsning om Indiens vej ind i Afrika – i klar konkurrence med de fremstormende kinesere.

NAI skriver herom i sit seneste elektroniske nyhedsbrev:

India in Africa: Commercial Aggrandisement or Partnership for Development?
by Alex Vines, The Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, London
Thursday 19 June 15.15-17.00

Chair: Yenkong Ngangjoh Hodu

Much has been written about Chinas re-engagement with Africa but less on India although its connections with Africa are deeper and longer than those of China.

In April, the India-Africa Forum was launched in New Delhi as an effort by India to catch-up with China. This paper looks at Indias plans to expand in Africa and examines what the impact will be in Africa and what the drivers are for this renewed interest.

India is expanding commercially in non-Commonwealth countries such as Angola, the DR Congo, Ivory Cost and Senegal. Along the African Indian Ocean Rim, a deeper security led policy has increasingly dictated Indian efforts, including the opening of a surveillance base on Madagascar.

Alex Vines is Africa Programme Head at Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London. He has just co-edited a special issue on India and Africa of the South African Journal of International Affairs (published in April).

He has also recently been chair of the UN Group of Experts on Ivory Cost and served on the UN Panel of Experts on Liberia. He has published widely on Africa and has sat on the editorial boards of several academic journals including the Journal for Southern African studies.

This lecture is hosted by the Programme: Global Trade and Regional Integration: African Economies, Producers, and Living Conditions.

The lecture is open to all interested.
Venue: The Nordic Africa Institute, lecture room (2nd floor), Kungsgatan 38, Uppsala.
