Forskerparret Ulrika og Erik Trovalla har dokumenteret postkolonialt urbant liv i millionbyen Jos i det centrale Nigeria og startet et forskningsprojekt om sammenhæng mellem infrastruktur og spådomskunst.
Fotoudstillingen “Suprastructure” har været vist på Museum Gustavianum i Uppsala fra 17. november 2012 – 5. marts 2013. Nu kan fotoprojektet downloades fra Det Nordiske Afrika Instituts hjemmeside (se link nedenfor).
Livet i post-kolonien
Fotografierne, som forskerparret har taget under deres mange besøg i Nigeria, er en del af forskningsprojektet “Infrastructure as Divination: Urban Life in the Postcolony”, der finansieres af det Svenske Forskningsråd.
Genstandsfeltet for forskningen er infrastruktur og de kvalitative aspekter, der ofte overses. Byen Jos i det centrale Nigeria danner afsæt for projektet, hvis formål er at vise en innovativ tilgang til livet i samtidens Afrika:
“Sensitive to the informal, hybrid, often fragmented and paradoxical nature of life in the postcolony, this research explores vernacular modes of modernity. In the Nigerian city of Jos, as in most African cities, it is striking how its imperfections make the infrastructure very present in people’s everyday lives. Not just fixed and solid out there, the infrastructure comes into being through changing processes of flow and non-flow and presence and absence,” skriver Ulrika Trovalla på Nordisk Afrika Institut online og videre:
“Much effort is put into trying to predict these changing processes, and to discover new ways around the infrastructure’s shortcomings. At the same time, infrastructure becomes a system of signs through which people try to understand circumstances beyond those immediately at hand, such as the state of the city and the nation, and to whom they belong”.
“Like when diviners deduce the state of the world through the stones they have thrown, the materiality of infrastructure turns highly elusive questions into tangible clues.”
Arven fra Koolhhaas
Forskningsprojektet har sandsynligvis hentet inspiration i den hollandsk-fødte arkitekt og Harvard-professor Rem Koolhaas’ store Lagos-projekt – Harvard Project on the City – der bl.a. mundede ud i dokumentarfilmen “Lagos – wide and close”.
Fokus var også her på infrastrukturen, på hybrider som uorden og orden, formel og uformel, kaos og kontrol.
Ulrika og Erik Trovalla arbejder således videre med Koolhaas’ forsøg på at sætte ord og billeder til det urbane afrikanske landskab, som stadig savnes:
“The engrained vocabulary and values of architectural discourse are painfully inadequate to describe the current production of urban substance. They perpetuate an image of the city which is essentially Western, and subconsciously insist that all cities, wherever they are, be interpreted in that image; they systematically find wanting any urban form that does not conform. Our words cannot describe our cities with any precision or pleasure.” (Koolhaas, “Fragments of a Lecture on Lagos”)
Ulrika and Erik Trovalla forsker i kulturel antropologi og etnologi med base på henholdsvis Nordisk Afrika Institut i Uppsala og domkirkebyens Universitet.
