With an increasing number of Indians living abroad, either for work or having settled there, India now receives 10 percent – the largest share – of the total remittances (pengeoverførsler)sent by foreign workers across the world to their home countries.

According to the latest balance of payments figures, remittances this year so far in private transfers reached $27.1 billion(146 mia. d. kr.)

This is seen as a ‘powerful catalyst’ in helping India realize its aspiration of 10 percent annual growth in gross domestic product by 2008.

The bulk (hovedparten) of remittances in the past few years to India have come from North America, 44 percent of the total.

The Indian southern state Kerala receives the highest number of foreign remittances from the Gulf as nearly half of more than 4 million Indians working in various Gulf countries are from the state.

Foreign remittances to the state have been seven times of what Kerala received from the government of India as budget support, and the state is highly dependent on the remittances.
