LILONGWE, Malawi, 20 September 2010: Days after Malawi’s leader, Bingu wa Mutharika, held talks with Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the country has signed an agreement to explore minerals in the African country.
Ministers of Foreign Affairs between the two countries, Etta Banda and Monouchehr Mottaki signed a cooperation agreement in Tehran to go ahead with the deal.
Ahmedinejad himself said his country would send experts within the next six months to conduct advanced geological surveys and train 15 Malawians in the same area.
Iran wishes to ascertain minerals Malawi has in the deal.
Uranium is one of the rich minerals Malawi has and Iran is said to be building nuclear plants to boost civilian development purposes. World powers including the United Nations have since condemned Iran for its nuclear programmes.
