Background

Economically, Syria has done relatively well during the global financial crisis. The last five years have witnessed positive key figures with yearly growth rates between 4% and 5%, and foreign investments increasing considerably during the period.

On the other hand, Syria faces big future challenges with high fertility and youth unemployment rates. In light of the current events in other parts of the region, the pressure for economical and political liberalization seems to be growing. ‘
Are the economic reforms in Syria moving ahead fast enough to satisfy the demands of the Syrian youth?

Abdallah Abdel Razzaq Dardari is the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and deeply involved in the current economic reform process in Syria.
