The guiding development philosophy of Bhutan is “Gross National Happiness”. Pronounced by His Majesty the 4th King in 1972, Bhutan is the only country in the world to measure its wellbeing by Gross National Happiness (GNH) instead of Gross National Product (GDP).
GNH is composed of four pillars: (1) sustainable and equitable socio-economic development, (2) conservation of environment, (3) preservation and promotion of culture, and (4) promotion of good governance. The GNH policy has been passed in the Parliament, guiding all development plans and activities.
The Centre for Bhutanese Studies has carried out the first national survey of GNH, and several international conferences have been held to elaborate on GNH, and interest has been shown from the highest levels in Brazil, France, and Greenland. However, is it a concept relevant for the Danes, often called “the happiest people in the world”?
The Guest Lecture is organised by DIIS on the occasion of the official visit of Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Hon’ble Jigmi Y. Thinley to Denmark. The Prime Minister is leading Bhutan’s first democratically elected government since March 2008, and has made several contributions to the understanding of GNH. See also www.bhutan.gov.bt
The lecture will be followed by a brief question & answer session.
The seminar will be held in English.
