Jason Hart draws attention to the mismatch between the rhetoric of participation as a means of empowerment and the social, economic and political reality of many young people’s lives. He argues that without proper attention to the challenges presented by the context, the transformative potential of participation is not likely to be realised to any significant extent.

This session will also include a focus on institutional dynamics, considering the challenges for organisations seeking to pursue a participatory approach in their work. How must agencies develop – internally and in their relationships with donors and partners – in order to become more effective in the promotion of young people’s participation?

Jason Hart’s presentation will draw upon his experience as an anthropological researcher (working in developing countries plus the Middle East), as a consultant to various child and youth focussed development agencies and as an expert advisor to numerous global initiatives aiming to promote participatory development with young people.

We are looking forward to an interesting afternoon with Dr. Jason Hart. For your convenience, an essential article for orientation, “Attending to the political” is provided via the link and moreover, you are encouraged to google for additional articles and books published by Dr. Jason Hart.
