Background
Philippine au pair migration to Denmark and Norway has increased considerably during the last decade, in spite of the Philippine ban on au pairing to Europe.
Au pairs have left the Philippines as illegal emigrants, paying bribes to exit the country and migrating without the rights and entitlements of a Filipino OFW – an Overseas Foreign Worker.
However, au pair migration between the Philippines and Denmark has now taken a new step into a managed, legal system of migration on the basis of a bilateral agreement adopted in 2010, and Filipino au pairs are now leaving the Philippines legally.
On the basis of her PhD dissertation and new research conducted in Manila in February 2011, Helle Stenum’s presentation will focus on the governmentality of this new legal space of managed au pair migration, a space where gender, family, sexuality and nation are given the outmost importance.
