Marc De Vos’s presentation at DIIS will be based on his recently published book “After the Meltdown – The Future of Capitalism and Globalization in the Age of the Twin Crises” (Shohorn Books, 2009).
While there are plenty of books on the causes of the global financial crisis and how to respond to it with various forms of financial re-regulation, De Vos’s book delves into the long-term consequences of the crisis.
It examines what De Vos calls the “tectonic shifts that are almost invisible, underneath the economic reality and have to do with the intellectual convictions, mindsets of governments and markets and the evolution of globalization and geo-politics”.
The book argues that current crisis and growth policies alike are steering the world towards the ”Age of the Twin Crises”. The analysis suggests an uncomfortable new reality for globalization, international relations, the market economy, and future economic growth.
Beyond being critical of the world economy’s current trajectory, the book maps out an agenda for better markets and smarter government, combining insights from economics, politics, history, and law.
De Vos’s basic message is that the “natural biotope” of the market – in the financial sector as well as the real economy – must be reestablished so as to help all of humanity in the long run, as opposed to helping a few countries for a few years.
