This seminar focuses on three different cases of migration and the politics of deportation:
a. Deportations and the migration industry in Central America:
Despite several years of robust border enforcement, the number of irregular or undocumented Honduran migrants heading to the United States has increased. At the same time, increased border enforcement has made increasing number of border crossers dependent of human smugglers and higher smuggling fees have attracted organized criminal networks.
This seminar looks at the consequences of criminal networks and drug cartels taking over the human smuggling business, border crossing undocumented migrants face high risks of physical abuse and rape, extortion, disappearance and death.
b. Forced deportations of trafficked Nigerian women:
Rescuing victims of human trafficking from the sex industry has emerged as a significant practice within the framework of migration management. The presentation is based upon on-going multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork carried out among deported Nigerian women in Nigeria including field work in Denmark and Spain.
This presentation is about the inter-linkages of deportation and rescue among undocumented women migrant sex workers from Europe to Nigeria, discussed through the narratives of the Nigerian women themselves. During the presentation, Sine Plambech will make use of photos and visual material.
c. Undocumented migrants in Denmark focusing on underground-refugees:
A certain part of failed asylum seekers end up staying in Denmark under ground. For most of them, this is a desperate last option and not the result of a calculated plan.
One of the few organizations that, over the last 25 years, have assisted undocumented migrants in Denmark is The Committee for Underground Refugees, which will present at this seminar. The presentation will be kicked off by the documentary “A Matter of Decency” by Bombay Flying Club.
