During the last two decades, expulsion of irregular migrants and rejected asylum seekers has become an increasingly widespread practice and policy priority. Together with increased border control, deportation has become one of the ‘necessary solutions’ in the combat against irregular migration, justified with reference to the security and sovereignty of the state.

Return and readmission agreements are now important objectives in European and North American migration management systems, often linked to development aid, favourable visa quotas, and technical assistance to migrant countries of origin and transit.

This development raises a range of questions. How are enforced removal practices carried out? Which political priorities and policy logics are they based on? What does deportability and deportation mean for migrants? How can the emphasis on deportation and removal be theorized? How does it link to issues of security and sovereignty? And how can protection and anti-deportation movements be enacted and understood?
