Undocumented migration to Europe and the US has turned into an increasingly dangerous enterprise in which an unknown number of migrants die on the high sea, in the desert, or at the hands of drug cartels and others who take advantage of the migrant’s vulnerable situation.

In this public seminar, Ninna Nyberg Sørensen (DIIS) will talk about the changing dynamics of Central American migration to the US and the way in which the drug cartels take charge of migrants’ lives and death.

But the seminar will in particular look into which effects it may have in the public when mass media on a daily basis circulate images of dead migrants and other victims of the Mexican drug cartels.

For this we have invited Claudio Lomnitz to talk about images of ‘bad death’ in Mexico and their effects. He will talk on the basis of his book, Death and the Idea of Mexico (Zone, 2005), and his impressions of the current situation in the country.
