Background

How to reach out to Muslim communities has constituted an issue of pre-eminent strategic importance both in the United States and in Europe. Considerations about Western values, and the extent to which these can be shared, have featured highly in the agenda of both scholars and policy-makers.

Recent political and social developments both in Europe and the Muslim world have underlined the challenges posed by such dialogue—and the role of values within it.

If anything, the ongoing upheaval in North Africa and the Middle East has highlighted the importance of freedom of speech and democracy and the impact of youth and technology.

We will address these fundamental questions with Farah Pandith, appointed by the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as Special Representative to Muslim Communities. Her office is responsible for executing Secretary Clinton’s vision for engagement with Muslims around the world on a people-to-people and organizational level.

The meeting is part of Lighthouse Europe, a series of public conversations organized by DIIS in cooperation with the daily Politiken and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
