Female genital mutilation (FGM) is internationally recognised as a violation of the human rights of women and girls. However, despite this recognition, the tradition annually affects three million girls in Africa between the ages of 4-15 years old.

Furthermore, approximately 130 million women and girls worldwide live with the many somatic and psychological consequences of the unnecessary procedure which has no health benefits.

The seminar focuses on how to prevent FGM and presents speakers from national and international organisations which are working towards eliminating the practice of FGM.

The seminar is open to all interested, but please register online here no later than Tuesday 6 March, noon.

Pernille Fenger, Chief of UNFPA Nordic Office, will discuss the social, cultural and traditional aspects of the practice of FMG as well as present the UNFPA’s Joint Programme on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting.

Birgitte Zachau Handwerk, volunteer and fundraiser in The Orchid Project, will give a presentation of the organisation and talk about their work to eliminate FGM on international level.

Hanne Gylche, midwife and member of Foreningen mod Pigeomskæring, will talk about the health consequences of FGM, the work of the organisation as well as initiatives implemented to prevent FGM in Denmark.
