Many observers of the war in Afghanistan have come to the conclusion that a successful withdrawal from Afghanistan demands winning the hearts and minds of the local populations.

Behind the war of bombs and bullets a propaganda war is playing out, and increasingly efforts to counter the narratives of the Taliban and other insurgent movements in Afghanistan and Pakistan are launched by Western governments.

These efforts are launched as a reaction to the communication and messaging of the counterpart, who employ a variety of media to communicate their messages. But who do they address, and what are their messages? Is engagement and dialogue with the Taliban at all an option or how do we disrupt the propaganda war.
